MRPMA is one of the oldest trade associations of the rubber sector in Malaysia which represents the interest of the rubber products manufacturing industries. MRPMA held its 43rd Annual General Meeting on 12 August 2020 and we proudly announce Mr Yeaw Kok Kwey, the Managing Director of Associated First Rubber (M) Sdn. Bhd., as the new President, to helm the Association.
The newly elected members of the Management Committee who will serve the terms of up to two years through 2022 are:
This diverse committee of experienced and talented industry players will play an important role in bearing the torch not only the Malaysian rubber products manufacturers but also the equipment, raw material, and services of the related value chains of the rubber sector in such a time as this. The coming years would be challenging, not only for the Malaysian rubber products manufacturing sector but the Malaysian economy as a whole which has been drawn into the global ‘Great Lockdown’ recession. In Mr Yeaw Kok Kwey’s inaugural speech, he expressed his heartiest congratulations, on behalf of the Association, to YB Dato’ Dr Mohd Khairuddin Aman Razali, the Minister of Ministry of Plantation Industries and Commodities; YBhg Datuk Ahmad Nazlan Idris, Chairman of the Malaysian Rubber Board; and Yang Mulia Raja Dato’ Haji Idris Raja Kamarudin, Chairman of the Malaysian Rubber Council. All the various related government ministries and agencies were thanked for their cooperation and assistance given to the industry and MRPMA. All the rubber product manufacturers were also acknowledged for their perpetual assistance and support of the various partnerships, programmes, and initiatives of the Association. The former President of MRPMA, Dato’ Dr Ong Eng Long was also appreciated for his contribution to the Association since 2013. Mr Lim Sum Teck and Mr Steven Ng Ching Eng were also acknowledged for their valuable service in the former Management Committee as the Vice President and the Honorary Treasurer, respectively. Mr Lim’s and Mr Steven Ng’s resourcefulness in the Association commenced in 1989 and 1993, appropriately. Mr Yeaw opined that 2020 is a challenging year for not only the Association but also the Malaysian economy because of the pandemic and the global recession. The rubber products manufacturers were requested to revive and move in full gear competitively with productivity in the business operations despite the recovery Movement Control Order and stringent SOP protocols to control the epidemic. In his speech on the state of the industry, the president indicated that 2019 recorded steady growth in the exports of rubber products which totalled an estimated RM23 billion. Latex goods and non-latex goods recorded RM18.9 billion and RM4.3 billion, respectively. With the rising cases globally of the COVID-19, latex medical products and PPEs are the much sought-after commodity. In January 2020, the rubber gloves industry is predicted to dominate the use of natural rubber with 31,684 tonnes or 76.3 percent of the total domestic consumption. Malaysian rubber gloves are expected to increase 20 percent to 230 billion pairs by the end of 2020, an increase of 192 billion pairs from the previous year and the global demand for rubber gloves is expected to increase by 15 to 20 percent compared to the usual demand growth of 8 to 10 percent. It was emphasized that the increase in the membership of MRPMA to 152 members reflected the growing importance of the role of the Association in safeguarding the plight and interest of rubber product manufacturers. The support of members is pivotal, he said, to ensure the performance, success, and longevity of the Association. He concluded the speech and implored for the industry players to continue their support for MRPMA; it’s events, seminars, conferences, and publications. Also, it was suggested that through the period of hardship and various crisis, “we must come out together, in full force and more vigorously in achieving the growth and success of the rubber products manufacturing industry for the benefit of the GDP of the country and the Malaysian economy
